Commissioner — Daren Tang

Director General, WIPODaren Tang

Daren Tang has been the Director General of WIPO since 2020. He starts a second six-year mandate on October 1, 2026. His vision is to transform the global intellectual property (IP) ecosystem from a set of legal rules into a powerful catalyst for jobs, investment, business growth and economic development for all countries – making IP more widely understood, used and connected to innovation, creativity, growth and prosperity.

Under his leadership, WIPO has worked to mainstream IP as a practical tool for creators, entrepreneurs, researchers and communities. He has championed the building of one global IP movement, where developed and developing countries alike can shape and benefit from the global IP ecosystem. Central to this is keeping IP frameworks future-ready, ensuring WIPO’s treaties, services, data platforms and tools serve the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s users.

A pillar of DG Tang’s tenure has been steering WIPO’s work on AI – being the world’s leading forum on the intersection of AI and IP and developing frameworks that address these issues. He has championed a balanced approach that fosters innovation while ensuring that human creators and inventors remain at the center of the IP system.

He has also worked to build WIPO itself into a financially sound, digitally capable, people-centered organization.

Mr. Tang is a former legal counsel and senior government official from Singapore. He is an avid jazz pianist and has written a book on the history and culture of tea.
