Lakshmi N. Mittal is Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company. A globally respected entrepreneur, industrialist and philanthropist, he has played a transformative role in reshaping the steel industry through consolidation, globalization, and strategic acquisitions across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and the CIS region. Born in Rajasthan, India, in 1950, he graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, and began his career in his family’s steel business before establishing a steel company in Indonesia in 1976 that ultimately evolved into ArcelorMittal.
Mr. Mittal was the first to recognize that the steel industry would benefit from consolidation and globalization. His rolling mill in Indonesia grew to become the world’s largest steel company and, following its landmark merger with Arcelor in 2006, created ArcelorMittal.
Mr. Mittal has received numerous international honors and awards, including India’s Padma Vibhushan, the Forbes Lifetime Achievement Award, and the World Steel Association Medal. He has served on the boards of world-leading multinational corporations, including Goldman Sachs and Airbus, reflecting deep experience in global governance and strategic leadership.
Beyond business, he serves on several prominent boards and advisory councils, including the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council, and the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. Together with his wife, Usha Mittal, he is actively involved in philanthropy, supporting education, healthcare, and child welfare initiatives through major contributions including to Harvard University.
Mr Mittal is a passionate believer in the power of technology, but recognizes the imperative of ensuring that great care is taken when it comes to the responsible roll-out of AI, ensuring that innovation must be accompanied by strong governance, transparency, inclusivity and measurable public benefit.
